TV Ads and society

TV ads are often seen by observers as offering a cultural reference point for any given generation. Some ads that appeared in the 1960's now look strange, simplistic...almost patronising - the people that produced them are now probably more concerned about an annuity. However they are merely reflective of that period of history. As society has become a whole lot more sophisticated and cynical, so advertising has progressed. The straight-laced attitude which reflects that era (but then changed throughout the 1960's), where only people of a certain gender, age and class were allowed to speak on the television changed hugely.

Why TV ads matter

Although internet advertising has grown at astronomical rate in recent year, having overtaken TV in terms of audience share, TV advertising is still a very prominent marketing channel for advertisers. TV advertising campaigns can change attitudes, create brands, establish a fashion and cause controversy in a way that is not possible through any other medium. A successful TV campaign can indeed 'make' or break a company and it's brand. get it right, and you can leave a lasting legacy. Get it wrong, and you can endanger a brands existence
